Manzanita

Arctostaphylos manzanita

I am perfumed with fragrant resins.

My bark, brilliant and rusty red.

I grow in the East Bay highlands — that is my home, in the chaparral.

My branches are made into fine digging sticks that the Ohlone people take care of our beautiful homeland with.

My flowers are reminiscent in taste to a ripe green apple.

My berries look like tiny red apples; and out of those berries, a delicious tart, sweet cider is made by generations of Ohlones.

Where I am from on Ohlone land, the land is slightly warmer, slightly higher, and the Earth smells sweet of honey and sages.

My true name is hawwen, but you can also call me manzanita.
